RADIUM GIRLS – march 2

WHAT: The Explora Theater presents Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving ensemble piece that tells the story of five young women who challenged the U.S. Radium Corporation in court in the 1920s. Some 70 women were hired to perform various tasks including the handling of radium, while the corporation’s owners and the scientists familiar with the effects of radium carefully avoided any exposure to it. Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she watches her friends getsicker and fights for her day in court. Her historic battle paved the way for increased workers’ rights.

CIRCUS ARTS FOR WOMEN – march 3

WHAT: You know you want to learn!  Stilt-walking, juggling, and (of course) clowning around! The NHCC offers a Circus Arts Institute each summer for kids, but we know that regardless of age – everyone wants to challenge themselves, push their limits and try something new. THE PORTAL TO NON-ADHESIVE BINDINGS – march 3

WHAT: Afraid of glue? Does PVA make you shudder? Then this is the class for you! We will make 3 bindings that have not one drop of PVA to complete. Starting with a double pamphlet stitch, we’ll move on to a multiple sectioned button-hole stitch. This exposed spine sewing forms a linear pattern at the head and tail. The resulting visual effect is almost like a window looking into the center of the spine. We will finish off with a variation of a long stitch book which includes two chain stitches across the spine, a very pretty binding. All three have soft covers and lay flat when opened.

LATIN DIVA SERIES: ILIANA ROSE – march 3

WHAT: Pianist, percussionist, clarinetist, and vocalist Iliana Rose combines impeccable timing with a pure, sensual voice and the ability to phrase found only in natural-born jazz singers.  Performing with her band, she also sits in with some of the finest session players in Los Angeles and Miami and plays a wide range of American jazz standards, pop, and ballads, as well as Latin musical styles from salsa to bachata.  Raised in Miami by Cuban parents and grandparents, Rose is steeped in Cuban rhythms and culture.  She sings in six languages, and her spontaneous humor captivates an audience in both English and Spanish.  The fifteenth concert in the NHCC’s popular Latin Diva Series.

JUNG, THE RED BOOK AND THE INNER JOURNEY – march 4

WHAT: In 1913, C.G. Jung embarked upon an extraordinary imaginative journey he called his confrontation with the unconscious. SOLAR TRANSITIONS: INTRODUCTION TO PRINTMAKING USING THE SUN – march 4

WHAT: Artist/printmaker: Adabel Allen, BFA in Printmaking with Honors, member of New Grounds Print Workshop and OFFCenter’s Program Development & Marketing Manager. Adabel will guide participants on how to create a 5” x 7″ solar gravure plate and then print it on an intaglio press. Participants will need to bring either a digital photo on a CD or jump drive, or create a drawing on translucent vellum on the day of the workshop (might want to bring a sketch to work from.) Can bring a sack lunch to eat while printmaking plates are curing (~20 minutes.) All materials provided. 2 sheets of paper per person will be provided for prints.

WHAT A RELIEF! PRINTMAKING WITH CAROL SANCHEZ – march 6 (start date of four-part workshop)

WHAT: Relief printmaking is one of the oldest and most basic print processes. Images are printed from a raised surface in which non-image areas have been cut away. This four-week class covers some techniques in relief printmaking including: Wood-cut, Linocut, Reductive Color Printing. There is a strong emphasis on experimentation and exploration of ideas. All levels welcome. Be prepared with ideas and ready to dig in on the first session. All materials provided.

LA PALABRA – THE WORD IS A WOMAN WITH JESSICA HELEN LOPEZ – march 6 (start date of four-part workshop)

WHAT: La Palabra will explore the idea of creation myths and the female creative principal facilitated by Jessica Helen Lopez. This is a four-part intensive workshop designed to assist the writer in creating a literal and metaphorical “body” of work. Each workshop will address a particular region of the female body.  The workshop focuses on the topography of the body in the context of its beauty and flaws, functionality and health, sex-positivity and sexual/gender identity.  We will identify and include other cultural and geographical relationships that contribute to the daily transformations that work to create who we are as women and as writers.  Essential to the workshop will be an on-going writing prompt utilizing a collection of black and white photographs that portray the unique and varied landscape of the female body. The workshop will culminate in a linked poem of four sections.

START YOUR MEMOIR IN POETRY OR PROSE WITH VALERIE MARTINEZ – march 7 (start date of five-part workshop)

WHAT:  Using the theme of “Windows, Doorways and Passages,” award-winning teacher and poet Valerie Martínez will encourage writers to begin “telling their lives” in poetry and/or prose through creative exercises and peer-sharing. This workshop will run for five weeks in March and one week in April, once a week for two hours on Wednesday evenings.  In honor of Women & Creativity Month, this workshop is being offered at a reduced rate. CONCERTINA BOOK WORKSHOP WITH MICAELA SEIDEL – march 8

WHAT: Using the theme of “portals” as a starting point we will create a basic accordion book to which pages may be added. We will focus on learning how to construct a front cover and back cover with a pocket. We will experiment with page variations including the creation of windows and pop ups.

FOUR POETS RESPOND – march 8

WHAT: Four Poets Respond is poetry-as-performance that responds works by contemporary artists.  Each year, four poets come together to write about art, collaborate, and compose an original performance piece that reflects on issues of interest and urgency to women.  This year Lauren Camp, Jasmine Cuffee, Valerie Martínez and Shelle Sánchez perform in response to personal objects as well as artwork by Camp, Becky Holtzman, Stephanie Lerma, Maria Moya, Carol Sanchez and Jennifer Zona. This unusual poetic performance—spoken word, improvisation, movement, theater—is directed by Tricklock Theatre’s Elsa Menendez.

JANE MONHEIT – march 8

WHAT: Outpost presents two nights with gifted jazz vocalist, Jane Monheit and her quartet.  Thursday will be a regular Outpost concert, while Friday will be an Outpost Benefit featuring a small table jazz club setting with a pre concert reception and refreshments provided by some of the areas finest restaurants. All proceeds for the benefit go to support Outpost. An extraordinarily gifted jazz vocalist whose sincere and romantic interpretations of exceptional songs has made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds, Monheit has garnered numerous accolades. Her first album, Never Never Land, was voted top debut recording by the Jazz Journalist’s Association and stayed on the Billboard Jazz chart for over a year. Subsequent albums debuted at number one and yielded two Grammy nominations. Her most recent, Home, is a collection of standards and features the band she has worked with onstage and off for most of her career, as well as special guests such as John Pizzarelli, Mark O’Connor, and Larry Goldings.

YOUR INNER MONOLOGUE – march 9

WHAT: A free workshop designed to empower survivors of domestic abuse. Through powerful and positive objectives, we work to ignite a progressive and comforting experience for this workshop and for it’s participants. The workshop is facilitated by Iliana Perez, who has worked as a Montessori educator, actress, and theatrical installation designer. As a survivor of domestic violence, Iliana Perez’ workshop focuses on empowering the self through awareness and creativity, passionately informed from her own journey. She currently studies at New Mexico State University, also residing in New Mexico with her daughter and farm animals.

DANCING EARTH: “NIGHT OF STARS*MOON*WATER*” – march 9

WHAT: Award-winning inter-tribal Indigenous dance ensemble Dancing Earth, led by renowned choreographer Rulan Tangen, presents its first festival of international Indigenous contemporary performing arts in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center.  This unique event, moving from powwow to percussion in a vital and riveting expression of diversity, features 12 of Native America’s finest performing artists and is designed to preview and support the creation of Dancing Earth’s new work, an eco-production dedicated to awareness of Native perspectives on water.  In honor of this upcoming theme, the festival performances culminate in a multidisciplinary improvisation about water.

COPTIC STITCH BINDING WITH A WINDOW – march 10

WHAT: This ancient binding dates back to the 4th century. Coptic books open to lay flat and have multiple sections. The chain-like pattern sewn across the exposed spine also attaches the hard covers to the book block. This is a perfect binding for a journal. RECYCLE, REPURPOSE, REGENERATE: A PERSONAL TEXTILE ART WORKSHOP – march 10 (start date of two-part workshop)

WHAT: Spend four hours ripping, cutting and disassembling then tying, knotting and weaving.  It’s all about transformation—creating amazing and personal textile art from discarded clothing, blankets, fabrics, clothing and yarn. This workshop is engaging, completely hands-on, surprisingly satisfying (once you overcome the fear of cutting a sweater into strips!), and often meditative. Your finished tapestry will be a unique, outward expression of your inner creative voice!   Zona, an accomplished textile artist who has developed her own unique visual voice, will guide through the process and also teach specific techniques. Initially, participants might be challenged with idea of ripping and cutting in order to create, but the process is fun and inspiring. Recycled fibers will be provided, but please bring in your own yarns, articles of clothing, blankets, scarves, laces, or coats to personalize your fiber weaving, along with a good pair of scissors!

WHAT: I fell in love with this box the first time I saw it. It’s lovely, and kind of on the shallow side, with 3 inner partitions and a removable lid with sides. Partitioned boxes are great for organizing collections and can be utilized as shadow boxes. This box would be large enough to for most of your bookbinding tools, yet compact enough to carry with you. In fact it’s what I use for my tools. I can’t think of a portal reference for this one!

WHAT: Pianist, singer and songwriter, Eliane Elias is known for her distinctive, immediately recognizable musical style blending her Brazilian roots and alluring voice with her impressive instrumental jazz, classical, and compositional skills. OUT OF CONTEXT WITH SPECIAL GUEST, MYRA MELFORD / CK BARLOW OPENS – march 30

WHAT: A Creative Soundspace 2012 event. Out of Context began in 1997 as a one time only project to explore a way of creating music called Conduction, a vocabulary of signs and gestures transmitted by a conductor to an orchestra providing instantaneous possibilities for altering or initiating harmony, melody, rhythm, articulation, phrasing or form. Now 14 years later with continual development, the ensemble has performed a real-time score to the classic 1932 silent film Peter Pan (4 screenings/4 versions), performed at the Georgia O’Keeffe museum in Santa Fe; “playing” the photographs of Edward Weston; performed a concert “playing” the book – 1”=25 Miles, by Sumner Carnahan; recorded a score for the film The Burden Carriers, by Pierre Barrera; and created a sound score for Theater Grottesco’s Wenomadmen. OOC has released 4 critically acclaimed CD’s and contributed several new signs and gestures to the Conduction Lexicon. The ensemble is J.A. JAPANESE 4-HOLE BINDINGS – march 31

WHAT: In this class the traditional 4-hole stab binding and it’s variations; the tortoise-shell, the hemp-leaf, and the kangxi, will be practiced. These books are soft bound, use no glue, and single, non-folded sheets of paper can be utilized for the text block. These elegant bindings are wonderful for small editions and chapbooks, and teachers find them especially useful in classroom projects.

WHAT: Led by Micaela Seidel.  In this workshop we will create a beautiful shrine assemblage. We will decorate small boxes with found objects, acrylic and metallic paints, lace, beads and a variety of other materials. JAPANESE SHIHO CHITSU BOX – march 31

WHAT: It’s a traditional Japanese box originally used to house books and pamphlets. Many people use them now for photos and prints. It is absolutely beautiful in its form and function as it unfolds out completely flat and closes with a bone clasp.

WILLOW WISHES FOR THE SANTA FE RIVER: MAKE A WISH COMMUNITY WORKSHOP – march 31

WHAT: During this hands-on workshop learn about water, the Santa Fe River and restoration through art, writing and science that culminate in making willow wish poles–native willow adorned with wishes that we will plant along the river. This workshop is an introduction to  the “Rivers Run Through Us” project: in the late spring of 2012, a small group of women will walk the length (46 miles) of the Santa Fe River. This four-day journey will serve as a deep exploration of our river and the Santa Fe Watershed. It is designed to engage, create awareness, educate, and illuminate our relationship with the earth.  Community members who live along the river will be invited to meet the women along the way–honoring, protecting and celebrating the river.

E·CO: TWENTY LATIN AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN PHOTOGRAPHERS – february 1  – march 31

WHAT: E • CO Photography Exhibition, made by twenty Latin American and Europeans photographic collectives, whose works have been commissioned by the Ministry of Culture of Spain, under the Spanish Presidency of the European Union and within the celebrations of bicentenary of many Latin countries’ independence. Each collective has received the proposal to raise a visual essay that reflected its concerns around one of the most important topics of our day: the environment. Faced with such a wide initial approach, the first challenge was conceptualize the proposal, and try to define an issue that every day becomes more important in our society. The complexity of this subject has been expressed since the initial call, since each country has different definitions of what “Environment” means.

RADIUM GIRLS – throughout early march

WHAT: The Explora Theater presents Radium Girls by D.W. Gregory. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving ensemble piece that tells the story of five young women who challenged the U.S. Radium Corporation in court in the 1920s. Some 70 women were hired to perform various tasks including the handling of radium, while the corporation’s owners and the scientists familiar with the effects of radium carefully avoided any exposure to it. Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she watches her friends getsicker and fights for her day in court. Her historic battle paved the way for increased workers’ rights.
