Tête-à-Tête Artist Trading Cards – sign up by march 15

WHAT: We don’t mind saying… this is a fabulous project.  Here’s how it works:  You submit your request to play by March 15. We mail you 10 blank trading cards and instructions.  You beautify those cards with paintings, prints, whatever you see fit – and mail them before April 15.  We shuffle all the submission we receive and mail you a deck of 10 original trading cards, beautified by creative from all over the place.  We all oooh and ahhh over our lovely, small works of art!

WHAT: Works by Gail Gering, Diane McGregor, and Heidi Pollard at the OASIS Art Gallery
Gail Gering works with salvage metals in a grid format, creating patinas to change the surface of the metal. Minimalist grid paintings by Diane McGregor contain meditative fields of layered oil paint. “My work contrasts formal elements of stillness and rhythm, order and randomness, and the geometric with the organic,” says McGregor. Heidi Pollard uses drawing and painting to negotiate just about everything: “a powerful ghost-thing, a metaphor, will sometimes arise when sounds, smells, colors and definitions are rubbed together in surprising ways.”

Women who love to move – dance & fitness classes – beginning march 2

Ballet-Afrique Contemporary Dance Fusion Classes – beginning march 3

WHAT: Beginner-friendly community dance classes, for all levels, that blend the natural aerobic movement of fundamental West African dance with the most accessible and expressive elements of ballet, modern and jazz. Developed and taught by Romy Keegan, Ballet-Afrique is intended to intelligently build strength and stamina, while inspiring dancers to move and express with grace and joy through exuberantly graceful choreographies! Indian Classical Dance – march 4, 11, 18, and 25

WHAT: Indian classical dance “Bharatanatyam” is an ancient form of temple dance: Unique, Eternal, and Universal. It is one the most subtle and graceful styles of dance art in the world.  Born within the precincts of the temple, Indian classical dance uses the rich repertoire of Hindu mythology as a fine medium of expression.  This highly developed stylized and sophisticated art form gives aesthetic delight to art lovers around the world.

A Wing and a Prayer: New Work by Suzanne Sbarge – march 6 – 31

WHAT:  In this new series of collage paintings by Suzanne Sbarge, there is the ever-present tension between the seeming opposites of familiarity and otherworldliness, interior and exterior space, domesticity and freedom, sky and earth, real and imagined. These pieces invoke a wing and a prayer – the perpetual gamble and delicate balance of being alive. She says, “I find these collaged hybrid characters navigating surreal dreamscapes to be strangely comforting. They surprise and trouble me, open doors, provide breathing space and leave me wondering.”

Encompass: 7th & Mountain Exhibitions – march 6 – april 17

WHAT: In 2016, Harwood Art Center will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a year of programming dedicated to exploring the organization’s important role in this community. As a precursor, Harwood’s 7th & Mountain exhibitions will feature luminary local artists of all ages who have had a significant impact on and been significantly impacted by Harwood, while contributing to the larger creative dialogue in New Mexico. The exhibitions premiere as part of Harwood’s annual Encompass event, an evening of open studios with 45 resident artists, community art making projects and more.

Unconfined: Empowering Women through Art – march 7 – 29
ten for the tenth collaboration >

WHAT: Bernalillo County Cultural Services and Southwest Women’s Law Center present, “Unconfined: Empowering Women through Art,” an exhibit of artwork featuring New Mexico women who are practicing artists, women detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center, and girls detained at the Juvenile Detention Center. Each artist’s work tells her individual story; their experiences are diverse, yet the visual stories and expressions of creativity connect these women in differing situations. Throughout the month, experience the same workshops which were offered to the women and girls who are detained. Artist Holly Roberts will teach a painting and collage workshop. In another workshop, experience qigong movement and write an “I am” poem and learn how to make a calligram.

Bookworks and UNM Creative Writing Program Present Musician, Kim Gordon, with her new Memoir Girl in a Band – march 1

WHAT:  Kim Gordon visits Albuquerque on tour for her new Harper Collins Memoir Girl in a Band. Gordon, a founding member of Sonic Youth, tells her story–a memoir of life as an artist, of music, marriage, motherhood, independence, and as one of the first women of rock and roll, Gordon tells of her family, growing up in California, her life in visual art, her move to New York, the men in her life, her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, her music, and her band.

WHAT:  Launch your personal journey and the month of Women & Creativity with a lively afternoon of inspiration shared and inspiration discovered. Meet, play, create and roam through installations, interactive stations and timed presentations with talented Albuquerque movers in visual arts, dance, film, science, ballooning and photography. Curated by Albuquerque artists and scientists, TRANSPORT is an open invitation to join a 30-day collective experience to explore “what moves you?” Participants pledge to try something new and discover personal aspirations. TRANSPORT also offers a closing event & inspirational Horizons gatherings in unique locations during March. The Art of Food: POP-UP Dinner – march 3

WHAT: During the month of March, edible Santa Fe invites you to dine and create with great women artists, writers, architects, designers, photographers, poets, and others during six unique pop-up events. Women chefs will prepare inspired multi-course meals at galleries and maker spaces. Featuring Chef Kimberly Cavlo in conjunction with From the Ground Up: Design Here + Now: A group exhibition at 516 ARTS showcasing contemporary work by established and emerging Albuquerque area designers and architects. The exhibition features both built and speculative projects.

Happy Arte Hour – march 5

WHAT: On the first Thursday of the month, the National Hispanic Cultural Center invites adults for creative fun in a relaxed, social setting which includes chips, salsa and cash bar to fuel your creative juices. Sheila Jordan-Cameron Brown Duo / Patti Littlefield-John Rangel Duo (Open) – march 5

WHAT: NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan is known for her superb scat singing, her ability to reach the emotional depths of a ballad and an uncompromising, entirely non-derivative style. She counts the great Charlie Parker, whom she played with in New York in the early 1950’s, among her greatest influences. The recipient of the 2008 Mary Lou Williams Award for a Lifetime of Service to Jazz, Jordan is the pioneer of the bass-voice duo in jazz, and her longtime duo with bassist Cameron Brown has performed worldwide and released two live albums. Albuquerque’s own soulful jazz and blues singer Patti Littlefield and award-winning Santa Fe based pianist John Rangel open the evening.

Jesus Muñoz Flamenco – march 6 and 7

WHAT: Jesús Muñoz Flamenco, with principal dancers Jesús Muñoz and Valeria Montes, represents a new generation of flamenco artists dedicated to preserving a unique philosophy of structural improvisation. Muñoz is both contemporary and innovative in his choreographic approach, exploring the range of flamenco’s human instrument. The internationally based company is also host and home to some of the finest musicians in the world, with recognitions ranging from platinum-selling albums to the Grammy’s. Their shared mission is to transmit, rejuvenate, and reanimate flamenco’s good energy—some coming through the interpretation of archaic forms and some created in the present moment.

Ideation Cards/Bookmaking Ideas – march 7

WHAT: The Ideation Cards designed by Julie Chen are a creative tool to unlock the creativity around the concepts of bookbinding. The Story of Food Workshop – march 7

WHAT: Have you ever dreamed of writing your family cookbook? Starting a recipe blog? Simply posting a few recipes on TasteSpotting? Join Deborah Madison and edible Santa Fe to learn to tell the Story of Food. Madison will conduct a three-hour seminar on food writing and memoir. Following the writing workshop, eSF will conduct a plating and food photography demonstration geared towards the home chef and blogger.

Ethiopian Binding – march 7

WHAT: Come and make a connection to the ancient world! Make a book with wooden covers that dates back to 3rd century Africa. This binding has multiple sections with an exposed spine sewing that is done with 2 needles, and uses no glue. Sounds difficult but it’s actually much easier than a Coptic stitch binding! Join the class and we’ll pretend we are monks working away in an ancient monastery. Scratchy robes and funky sandals optional! All materials and tools will be provided.

WHAT: Mnemosyne’s Lounge features a diverse group of New Mexico women sharing their voices and stories, curated and directed by Juli Hendren, Hannah Kauffmann, and Elsa Menendez. Participants will develop and rehearse their stories and perform them in a cabaret-style evening.

Chispa: Latin Diva Series, featuring Sofia Rei – march 13

WHAT: Originally from Buenos Aires, Sofía Rei is one of the most charismatic, inventive vocalists on the New York music scene today. Her music, performed in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, is grounded in traditional South American rhythms like chacarera, zamba and vidala from Argentina, Colombian cumbia and bullerengue, and other genres that merge with jazz harmonies, electronic sounds, and rich improvisations. Her performance at the NHCC in March 2015 is the 19th in the Center’s signature Latin Diva Series, an integral part of its Chispa musical season. The series features Latina/Hispanic artists worldwide who are initiating or continuing successful international careers.

WHAT: This is a traditional Japanese box originally used to house books and pamphlets. Now, many people use them now for photos and prints. It is absolutely beautiful in its form and function. It starts as a compact box with a bone clasp closure that then unfolds out, layer by layer, until it lies completely flat. Perfect for viewing all of its contents. No previous experience required. Traditional Colonial Colcha Embroidery, Historic Bird Motif, with Annette Gutierrez Turk – march 14

WHAT: Colcha embroidery is an historic embroidery technique employed by the colonial Hispanic Settlers upon arrival in Nuevo Mexico. It was used to embellish altar cloths, bedding, clothing and probably began as a mending technique. The class project is a motif found on an historic bedcovering present in Museum archives.

WHAT: EKCO Poets Valerie Martinez, Michelle Otero, and Shelle Sanchez engage with community to create and share collaborative poetry. The Chupacabra Cantina – march 26 – 29

WHAT: Enter “The Chupacabra Cantina,” in Northern New Mexico where nuns, a bartender, and an unexpected guest plant seeds of social justice amid the daily chatter of community gossip and Fox News reports blaring in the background. Stories from Tierra Amarilla, Palestine and around the globe are woven into the fabric of the characters’ lives, moving them to question what kind of seeds they are planting, and if they are feeding the “chupacabra.” Accompanied by live music and song. Presented by Las Meganenas as part of the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Siembra: Latino Theatre Festival.

Women of the Lion – march 28

WHAT: Especially powerful Goddesses of the ancient world were associated with the lion. In this fun and empowering workshop, we will explore the images and meaning of three: Durga of India, Sekhmet of Egypt, and Inanna of Sumer. This is experiential also, as you will encounter these goddess in guided visualization and embody certain of their qualities in dramatic movement. These Goddesses have much to teach us! Caite Caperton, teacher of drama and creative dance, has studied and taught about these goddesses for many years. She has her own psychic connection with the Goddess Sekhmet.

Judy Chicago: Feminist Icon & Iconoclast – march 30

WHAT: One of the leading feminist artists of the 20th century, Judy Chicago is controversial, brilliant, outspoken, and challenging. This talk takes Chicago from the adoption of her birth city’s name through her explosive breakthrough project, The Dinner Party, to her multiple explorations of the human condition during the 30 years she has lived in New Mexico. A lecture by Lois Rudnick, author, art historian, and professor emerita of American Studies, University of Massachusetts Boston.

WHAT: During the month of March, edible Santa Fe invites you to dine and create with great women artists, writers, architects, designers, photographers, poets, and others during six unique pop-up events. Women chefs will prepare inspired multi-course meals at galleries and maker spaces. Farm & Table partners with edible Santa Fe to participate in The Art of Food, a pop-up dinner series during the month of March. Join us for a very special dinner featuring Chef Cristina Martinez from Artichoke Café. Chef Martinez will work alongside wine curator, Amy Haas and pastry chef, Tracy Johnson, to create a menu that highlights women farmers and food artisans.
