Our calendar includes all of our extraordinary statewide partners’ happenings, as well as all of the Featured Events for 2016. PLAY ALONG

Tête-à-Tête Artist Trading Cards – sign up by march 12

WHAT: We don’t mind saying… this is a fabulous project. Here’s how it works: You submit your request to play by March 12. We mail you 10 blank trading cards and instructions. You beautify those cards with paintings, prints, whatever you see fit – and mail them to us before April 15. We shuffle all the submission we receive and mail you a deck of 10 original trading cards, beautified by creative from all over the place. We all oooh and ahhh over our lovely, small works of art!
We’re hosting Trading Card Pop-Up Exhibitions at Harwood’s Encompass event on March 5 and at Maple Street Dance Space from March 18 – 20.

Poet’s Post Trading Cards – sign up by march 5

WHAT: Poet’s Post—a new Women & Creativity “play along” feature–shares your tweet-size poetry with others around the US (and beyond). Sign up and you will be mailed 15 blank postcards.
Write/paint/print a short poem or a few lines (140 characters or less)—the same on each card—and send them back to us. Women poets can write about anything. Men must write about women (in the spirit of Women & Creativity Month and Women’s History Month).
Then (if you want) tweet your short poem to #Poetspost, #W&C and #art_ful_life. We tweet the poetic posts as they arrive, if you haven’t already. We then mail each of you cards from 10 other poets in April—National Poetry Month. We also photograph and share your poems via and Women & Creativity.
Wait, you ask! Where did the other 5 cards go—I sent you 15 but only get 10 back! We also send postcards to those on our mailing list of publishers, poetry foundations, supporters and wealthy patrons, just to remind them how wonderful poetry is, in snail-mail form.

The Vibrant Work of Shakti Kroopkin – beginning march 2

WHAT: The work of local, contemporary artist Shakti Kroopkin will be on view at Farm & Table. Shakti’s abstract “shapespaces” are rooted in her memories of the Chicago cityscape in combination with her current surroundings of the vast raw beauty of New Mexico where she currently resides. The artist’s process exposes luminous spirit, imagination and movement while being grounded in her unique visual language of reoccurring lines, shapes, color and symbols. The raw expression of emotion and energy traverses the limitations of the finite world, inviting the viewer on a journey offering the freedom of infinite play.

The Likeness of Us – beginning march 9 – opening reception march 11
featured event collaboration >

WHAT: “When you look at me do you see yourself?” This cross generational art exhibit unites established women artists with young women from the Youth Services Center through a visual dialogue fostering self-reflection and creativity. Responding to the prompt “What advice would you give your teenage self?” the artists visually depict their advice for teen girls. The artwork is woven together in a meaningful way to create a tapestry of stories and guidance. This is a collaboration between Bernalillo County Cultural Services and at the nationally recognized Bernalillo County Youth Services Center.

Real Women Have Curves – march 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, & 20

WHAT: Josefina López’ original drama about five immigrant women working in a tiny sewing factory in East Los Angeles in 1987 highlights issues of gender politics and the Latina immigrant experience, as the action follows the course of a summer at the factory and the women talk about their lives, loves, and deepest desires. The playwright also co-authored the screenplay for the award-winning film of the same title, which premiered in 2002.

WHAT: Las Meganenas present The Chupacabra Cantina. Enter the Chupacabra Cantina in northern New Mexico, where anti-GMO nuns, a bartender, and an unexpected guest plant seeds of social justice amid the daily chatter of community gossip and Fox News reports blaring in the background. Stories from Tierra Amarilla, Palestine, and around the globe are woven into the fabric of the characters’ lives, moving them to question what kind of seeds they are planting, and whether they are feeding the chupacabra. California Dreaming: Guests Curated by Christina Rosenberg – beginning march 11

Happy Arte Hour – march 3

WHAT: On the first Thursday of the month, NHCC invites adults for artistic fun in a relaxed social setting, which includes snacks, refreshments, beer & wine for sale, and treats from Pop Fizz. Artist Jocelyn Salaz will lead participants from mortar and pestle to multi-colored paintings and exploring the process and science behind using the insect, cochinilla, as paint. Participants will grind the insects into a fine powder, mixing it with various household solutions to produce a wide range of colors. Please bring photographs, objects, or found imagery or let the colors and experimentation be the inspiration for your artwork.

Helen Sung @ Outpost Performance Space – march 4

WHAT: Pianist-composer, Helen Sung graduated from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance and subsequently won the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition. Now based in New York, she has worked with many jazz luminaries including Clark Terry, Ron Carter, Steve Turre, Wayne Shorter, and Regina Carter, and has released six albums as a leader, including her 2014’s “Anthem For A New Day,” her major label debut. She tours internationally and performs with the Mingus Big Band & Dynasty Band and Terri Lyne Carrington’s Mosaic Project.

WHAT: One of Albuquerque’s favorite Americana Folk Rock bands with a distinctly New Mexican sound, Wildewood features Meredith Wilder, guitar and vocals; Greg Williams, drums and audio; and multi-instrumentalist, Alex McMahon. The Merlettes is an all female New Mexico based country, honky tonk, Americana and roots band featuring lead singer and bandleader, Kristina Jacobsen and twanging, three-part vocal harmonies, lapsteel guitar, fiddle, drums and upright bass.

Chispa, Latin Diva Series: Ceci Bastida – march 5

WHAT: Born and raised in Tijuana and now living in Los Angeles, Ceci Bastida was one of the first women to rise in the ranks of contemporary Latin rock, joining the band Tijuana NO when she was just 15 and embarking on her solo career in 2006. Her 2010 album Veo la Marea was nominated for a Latin Grammy. This is the 23rd concert in the NHCC’s signature Latin Diva Series.

Orchestra of New Spain: Iphigenia en Tracia – march 6

WHAT: Iphigenia en Tracia, based on Euripedes’ Iphigenia in Tauris, was written in 1747 by José de Nebra, known as the leading late-Baroque composer of Spanish opera and zarzuela. A rarely seen work, Nebra’s ultimate, highly dramatic zarzuela is a tragicomic version of the legendary story, set near the ancient city of Troy. It is presented by the Orchestra of New Spain with all the panoply, splendor and humor it would have enjoyed when it opened in Madrid’s newly rebuilt Corral de la Cruz, featuring brilliant arias, Baroque Spanish dance and sumptuous sets and costumes. In Spanish and English with supertitles.

The Achromatopsia Series: Susan York discusses her experiment with Color – march 6

WHAT: In her new lithographs, artist Susan York explores achromatopsia, a genetic visual disorder known to most as color blindness. York challenges the viewer to see color in a different way, “As an artist who works primarily in values of grey and black, the experience of people affected by achromatopsia is of great interest to me. What is it like to view the world strictly in black and white?” In addition to her “Achromatopsia” series, York will discuss three new editions which relate to her sculptural work done with graphite. This talk will begin at 2 p.m. in the Tamarind Gallery.

Catherine Russell @ Outpost Performance Space – march 10

WHAT: Contemporary jazz and blues vocalist and New York native, Catherine Russell, who performed at the 2013 NM Jazz Festival, returns for Outpost’s Spring season. A back up singer for many Pop music greats (Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne), Russell has appeared on T.V. and film soundtracks, NPR’s “The New Jazz Divas” and The Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival. She has released five acclaimed solos albums, and her latest, Bring It Back, features tunes from the earliest days of jazz through the swing era and rhythm and blues explosion.

WHAT: This origami book structure was developed by the fabulous Hedi Kyle while snowed in during a blizzard. Using a single sheet of paper we will make folded pages that create pockets to store stuff in. They are great for business cards, photos, postcards, ephemera, and scrapbooks. WHAT: Born in Tijuana, Baja California to parents who were both pianists, acoustic folk-pop singer/songwriter Vanessa Zamora began piano lessons at the age of eight, and continued a year later with guitar and drums. While a student at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, she began uploading videos covering favorite songs by various artists on YouTube and social networking sites. When her melodic vocals and skilled musicianship attracted increasing attention, she added her own original compositions. WHAT: A star of world music, jazz, flamenco, and fusion, Buika is one of the most sought-after performers on the world stage.
